HCEC’s primary function is to provide EMS 9-1-1 response for Harris County Emergency Services District No.1.
9-1-1 staffs 24-hour Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU), with an additional peak-load MICU’s at varying times during the week. The day-to-day operations of the division are overseen by a 24-hour EMS Field Supervisor.
Each MICU is staffed by at least one “In-Charge” Paramedic and an “Attendant” EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic. Each In-Charge has completed a thorough Field Training Program, exceeded clinical standards and competencies, and proven themselves through experience as system providers. The In-Charge serves as the lead provider on the unit.
Attendant providers function under the supervision of the In-Charge, but have also completed a Field Training Program and met similar clinical standards and competencies. Attendant providers receive the same ongoing training and are encouraged to exercise their skills with the intention of advancing to In-Charge status.
