HCEC offers Advanced Medical Life Support training
January 28, 2016
The out-of-hospital emergency medical care field is an evolving profession in which often requires last minute life and death decisions. It is critical that First Responders continue to learn and sharpen their skills to remain competent, productive, and valuable to their patients and their agencies.
To help in this effort, Harris County Emergency Corps’ (HCEC) medical team taught nearly a dozen emergency medical professionals an (AMLS) course on January 27-28, 2016. The AMLS course is the first EMS education program that fully addresses how to best assess and manage the most common medical crises in patients, offering a “think outside the box” methodology.
Attendees learned the importance of sizing up a scene, participated in interactive group discussions on potential treatment strategies and using physical exams to rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in medical crises. The course uses an initial assessment-based approach that progresses to a diagnostic-based approach to quickly develop the best treatment plan.
EMS representatives from Friendswood EMS, HCEC, Northwest Fire Department, and Pediatric Home Nursing took part in the sixteen-hour, two-day program that is endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). It is accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services and is recognized by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT). Students who successfully complete the AMLS course will receive a certificate of completion that is valid for four years.
The course is for all levels of practitioners, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and physicians. HCEC is a registered course site through the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT).
